Another form of charity

When wild shouts and dull drumbeats boom across Hamburg's Inner Alster, it's happening again: the now legendary Dragon Boat Cup of the Michael Stich Foundation, which has developed into a real institution over the years.

The “Dragon Boat Cup” will take place on Hamburg’s Inner Alster for the 19^th time on June 13, 2025. If you ignore the two cancellations due to the pandemic, it is actually the 21th anniversary of the cup.

Born out of the need to use the proceeds from donations to secure the financing of the children's UKE immunodeficiency clinic, Michael Stich launched a race with the twelve-meter-long boats in the summer of 2005. Since then, partners from business, Hamburg entrepreneurs and celebrities take up the paddle every second Friday in June and put themselves at the service of a good cause. Most participants have been closely associated with the foundation for many years.

Up to 18 teams, each with 18 paddlers, compete against each other on the 200 meter long course and fight for the coveted trophy. It is almost a tradition that in the heat of the moment a wave is overlooked and the bathing season is opened for the occupants of the respective boat.
